Congress Files Privilege Motion Against BJP MPs Over Allegations Against Rahul Gandhi

The political temperature in Parliament soared on Friday as the Congress party moved a privilege motion against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs Nishikant Dubey and Sambit Patra. This action followed their controversial remarks targeting Rahul Gandhi, the Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP). The incident marks yet another chapter in the ongoing verbal clashes between the two parties, intensifying the already charged political environment.

The Basis for the Privilege Motion

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi announced the party’s decision to file the privilege motion, expressing dissatisfaction over the Speaker’s handling of the situation. “We moved a privilege motion against BJP MP Nishikant Dubey and Sambit Patra. Today we wanted a ruling from the Speaker, but the Question Hour was adjourned. Ironically, the same individual against whom the motion was raised was permitted to address the Parliament,” Gogoi said, as reported by ANI.

This sentiment was echoed by Congress MP KC Venugopal, who criticized the government for its alleged attempts to undermine opposition voices. “The government is bulldozing every effort by the opposition. Yesterday, derogatory remarks were made against the Leader of Opposition and another Congress member. Today, the same member was allowed to continue without any intervention from the Speaker. This clearly demonstrates the Speaker’s subservience to the government,” Venugopal remarked.

Escalating Political Tensions

The controversy gained momentum after BJP MP Nishikant Dubey questioned Rahul Gandhi’s associations during a Zero Hour discussion on Thursday. Dubey raised concerns about Gandhi’s alleged links to individuals and organizations abroad.

“I have 10 questions for the Leader of Opposition. What is your connection with Salil Shetty from the Open Society Foundation, who was part of the Bharat Jodo Yatra? Did this foundation fund the movement? Additionally, Rahul Gandhi recently met Mushfiqul Fazal, a person implicated in Bangladesh’s genocide,” Dubey alleged.

Dubey went on to question Gandhi’s meetings with prominent U.S. politicians such as Ilhan Omar, Ro Khanna, and Barbara Lee. “These individuals have consistently opposed Prime Minister Modi’s initiatives. Some of them support movements that threaten India’s territorial integrity, such as Khalistan and the separation of Kashmir. What is Rahul Gandhi’s association with these individuals?” he asked.

Sambit Patra’s Sharp Critique

Adding fuel to the fire, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra called Rahul Gandhi a “traitor of the highest order” during a press conference. Patra drew a connection between Gandhi, American billionaire George Soros, and investigative media outlet OCCRP (Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project).

“This is a dangerous triangle designed to destabilize India,” Patra claimed. “One side is George Soros, who has openly declared his intentions against India. Another side is OCCRP, which consistently targets India’s credibility. The third and most dangerous side is Rahul Gandhi, who seems to act against India’s interests at every turn. I have no hesitation in calling him a traitor,” Patra stated firmly.

Congress’ Strong Rebuttal

Congress leaders vehemently opposed the remarks, calling them derogatory and baseless. KC Venugopal condemned Patra’s accusations, stating, “The Congress party will not be intimidated by these malicious statements. The government is using its machinery to suppress dissent and silence opposition leaders.”

In a symbolic gesture of defiance, Rahul Gandhi posted an image on social media holding a copy of the Constitution while wearing a mask bearing the slogan “Modi Adani Bhai Bhai.” The post was accompanied by a message emphasizing the party’s determination to continue its fight. “The Adani deep state will not deter the Congress party,” Gandhi wrote, pointing to allegations of crony capitalism involving the Modi government and the Adani Group.

A Divided Parliament

The privilege motion filed by Congress has further divided the already polarized Parliament. While the opposition parties stand united in condemning the BJP’s rhetoric, the ruling party continues to justify its stance, accusing Rahul Gandhi of actions detrimental to the nation’s interests.

The Congress has demanded accountability and strict action against Nishikant Dubey and Sambit Patra for their remarks. Meanwhile, the BJP maintains that the questions raised about Rahul Gandhi’s associations are valid and should be addressed.

The Larger Implications

This incident is reflective of the growing rift between the ruling party and the opposition. The exchange of accusations is not just a political spectacle but also highlights the deep-seated tensions regarding governance, transparency, and national security.

The Congress party views the privilege motion as a tool to hold the BJP accountable for its statements, while the BJP sees it as an opportunity to question Rahul Gandhi’s political alliances and international engagements.

What’s Next?

As Parliament resumes, all eyes will be on Speaker Om Birla and his response to the privilege motion. The Congress party has made it clear that it will not back down until the issue is addressed to their satisfaction. At the same time, the BJP is likely to double down on its criticism of Rahul Gandhi, using it as a strategic advantage in the upcoming elections.

The incident underscores the deteriorating decorum in parliamentary proceedings, with personal attacks and unsubstantiated allegations overshadowing meaningful debates on pressing national issues. Whether this political storm will lead to constructive dialogue or further polarization remains to be seen.

For now, the privilege motion serves as a reminder of the high-stakes battle being fought in India’s Parliament, where the line between political rivalry and personal vendetta often blurs.
