PM Modi Attacks Congress, Prepares Key Agendas Ahead of Winter Session
New Delhi: Launching a sharp attack on the Congress party, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday accused them of weakening parliamentary democracy. Addressing the media here on Monday ahead of the start of the winter session of Parliament, underlining constructive dialogue, he targeted opposition parties for their alleged disrupting behaviour.
“Unfortunately, some people who have been rejected time and again by the people for their political motives are trying to control Parliament through such tactics. The citizens of this country watch all these things, and when time comes, they deliver their verdict,” said PM Modi. This came in response to the Opposition’s Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition facing a severe trouncing in the just-concluded Maharashtra Assembly polls.

The Prime Minister claimed that pathetic performance by the MVA showed total rejection at their politics by the people as it managed to secure as many as 49 seats in comparison to a thumping victory by BJP-led Mahayuti coalition which won as many as 235 out of 288 members of the assembly.
The Prime Minister even attacked the conduct of the opposition. He said they repeatedly obstructed the proceedings of the parliament with little respect to the democratic values and aspirations of people.
“They have been rejected by the people 80-90 times, yet they fail to allow meaningful discussions in Parliament,” he said, referring to the repeated losses faced by some opposition leaders and parties in elections.
In this regard, he said, “These parties neither respect the democratic process nor the expectations of the people. That is why they continuously fail to meet the aspirations of citizens.”
Appealing to them to hold constructive dialogue
The Prime Minister called a spade a spade by saying that these parties lack accountability and do not understand their responsibility.
PM Modi sought that all MPs should hold intense debates in the winter session so that it could be a genuine collaborative approach towards burning issues of the nation. “More and more people must be able to contribute to the discussions, he said, with emphasis on inclusiveness and an open character of dialogue at Parliament proceedings.”.
The Prime Minister of India says, “This session assumes particular significance because it is the first sitting of this Parliament in its 75th year since the Constitution of India came into practice.”
Parliamentary Business of Fundamental Importance The winter session of Parliament, which gets underway today and goes on till December 20, would be fairly heavy with legislative agenda. Among them, likely enough, would figure the Waqf Amendment Bill and the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill. In addition to them, the Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill and the Railway Act Amendment Bill would come up for consideration in Lok Sabha.

Guesses galore about the much-hyped ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill are floating over its advent. The new reiterations by the Prime Minister have consolidated that his government remains committed to working on roadmaps forward with this vision of aligning Lok Sabha and state assemblies polls for reducing the upheaval and the costs of elections.
The ‘One Nation, One Election’ Vision
One Nation, One Election’ has been the idea to which PM Modi refers time and again. On the face of it, One Election proponents argue that it can make the process less complicated in terms of elections and help free financial pressures or policy-making time for assessing long-term policy scenarios. The critics fight over operational logistics and constitutional issues: a battle between one election cycle with that of the state and the central government and the representation of people.
As this news of this bill may raise some hot debates within the parliament, that would be a great difference in India’s democratic processes if that happens.
Reminding the Importance of Democracy
As it has been the beginning of the session, PM Modi asked everyone to respect democratic values and parliamentary procedures reminding everyone that in doing these, the needs of the nations must come ahead of personal or partisan issues.
Apparently, pointing the will of the government to go through the legislative agenda at any cost, Prime Minister seems to have made a pointed remark at Congress and other opposition parties. Going into the winter session with a full plate of critical bills and amidst hopes of transformational legislation such as ‘One Nation, One Election’, it is going to be a very critical period in Indian politics.
Conclusion
This session of Parliament is going to be very intense as severe criticism by PM Modi over the opposition and healthy discussions that he encouraged them to have has made them really testy. Ahead of presenting the major legislation-drafts before parliament, moving on with the government led by BJP, opposition will have to counter these moves amidst ever-declining influence in the electoral space.
It offers scope for all sections of society to prove their concern for democratic ways and, through meaningful debates, solve the grave issues facing the nation. Collective responsibility in upholding the democratic vision envisioned by the founding fathers of the nation of India returns with the advent of the 75th year since the adoption of the Constitution.
